About us

OUR STORY

BSL Explore was founded by Alison Wherry-Alimo, a highly experienced British Sign Language teacher and assessor with over 30 years of teaching experience.

Alison is a native BSL user who has been immersed in Deaf culture from an early age. Her brother is Deaf, and her grandmother was a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), giving her a deep personal understanding of the Deaf community and the importance of accessible communication.

Throughout her career, Alison has taught British Sign Language and Deaf awareness across the UK. Her experience includes teaching at Bath College, City of Bristol College, City Lit, Remark! London, the BBC, Red Oaks in Bristol, and most recently SignWorld. She has also taught undergraduate Deaf Studies students at Bristol University.

Alison was involved in an international Deaf exchange programme in Norway, where she supported Deaf Norwegian students in learning BSL as part of their journey towards learning English.

In recognition of her dedication and passion for teaching, Alison was nominated for Signature’s “Teacher of the Year” award.

Alongside teaching, Alison also delivers engaging BSL tours in Bristol and Bath, designed for both Deaf and hearing participants who want to explore the rich history and culture of the local area in an accessible and interactive way.
